Build and publish a learning experience from one piece of content - an uploaded file, a web link or text you write in place - using the six-step wizard.
Before you start
You need the permission that allows you to create learning experiences. These are the default roles with this permission: Organisation Admin, Learning Experience Creator and Group Workspace Admin.
Start a new learning experience
- On the home page, select Create learning experience.
If you hold the Organisation Admin or Learning Experience Creator role, you become the Learning Experience Admin of each learning experience that you create.
If your organisation has no learning experiences yet, the page shows "No learning experiences yet" with a Create your first experience button. It opens the same wizard.
The wizard opens as a full-screen view titled "Build a learning experience", with six steps listed down the left: Get started, Resource, Details, Cover, Settings and Preview and publish. A line above each step's heading tells you where you are, for example "STEP 2 OF 6".
Continue stays unavailable until you have completed what the current step needs. If a save fails you stay on the step rather than losing what you entered. You can go back to an earlier step by selecting it in the list on the left or by selecting Back.
Get started
The first step asks "What are you building?" and offers two options. Select One resource for a single piece of content, such as a policy update, an announcement or single-topic learning. The other card, Multiple resources, organises several resources into modules - that path has its own article, Build a multi-module learning experience.
Selecting a card moves you straight to the next step.
Resource
The step asks "What resource are you adding?" You have two routes.
To use content you already have:
- Type in Search your resource library.
- Select a result.
That selects the resource and moves you on. If your library is empty, the search box is unavailable and the step invites you to upload your first resource instead.
To add something new, choose one of three cards below the search box.
- Upload resource uploads a file as soon as you drag it onto the card or choose it after selecting the card, and adds it to your resource library, where you can reuse it.
- Add weblink asks for a valid Web address and shows a preview of the page when one is available.
- Add text content opens an editor where you enter a Resource title, an optional Resource short description and the Content itself.
For text content, both a title and some content are required.
When you add a weblink, a YouTube or Vimeo video link is saved as a video resource, so learners watch it in a video player.
When an upload finishes, the step shows "Upload complete" and you select Continue to move on. A large package can take a few minutes to process first.
Note
Upload resource accepts PDF files, SCORM or xAPI packages saved as .zip files, and video files such as MP4, MOV or WebM. The standard limit for the largest file you can upload is 1 GB. If a file is too large, the step shows a message that explains why.
After you publish, you can change the resource on the Content tab of the learning experience. Select Change resource on the resource row and choose the new resource. You need the permission to edit content for this learning experience. These are the default roles with this permission: Organisation Admin and Learning Experience Admin.
The save confirmation titled "Save changes" says "Your changes will go live for enrolled learners immediately, and progress will be recalculated." When the save finishes, you see "Changes are live for enrolled learners. Progress will be recalculated."
For the Details, Cover, Settings and Preview and publish steps, and for saving a draft and coming back later, see Finish and publish a learning experience.
Troubleshooting
If New learning experience cannot be selected, you do not have the permission that allows you to create learning experiences. Hover over the button and you see "You do not have permission to perform this action".
If you see "This file type is not supported.", choose a PDF, a SCORM or xAPI package saved as a .zip file, or a video file.
If you see "This file is too large. Maximum file size is <size>.", choose a file within that size.
If you see "Upload failed. Check your connection and try again.", check your connection and add the file again.
If you see "We couldn't process this file. Check it's a valid SCORM or xAPI package and try again.", check the package and add it again.
If you see "This file is taking longer than expected to process. Try uploading it again later.", wait and add the file again later.
If you see "This link is invalid." under Web address, enter the full address of the page, starting with https.
If you see "Preview unavailable for this link.", continue anyway, because the preview is optional.
