Build and publish a learning experience that organises several resources into modules, in a set sequence or a flexible one, using the six-step wizard. This path suits onboarding, compliance and any other learning that has several parts.
Before you start
You need the permission that allows you to create learning experiences.
Start a new learning experience
- Open Learning Experiences from the main navigation.
- Select New learning experience.
The wizard opens as a full-screen view titled "Build a learning experience", with six steps listed down the left: Get started, Resource, Details, Cover, Settings and Preview and publish. A line above each step's heading tells you where you are, for example "STEP 2 OF 6".
Continue stays unavailable until you have completed what the current step needs, and each time you select it your work on that step is saved. If a save fails you stay on the step rather than losing what you entered. You can go back to an earlier step by selecting it in the list on the left, or by selecting Back.
Get started
The first step asks "What are you building?" and offers two options. Select Multiple resources. The other card, One resource, builds from a single piece of content, and that path has its own article, Create a learning experience from a single resource.
Selecting a card moves you straight to the next step.
Note
As soon as you choose Multiple resources, your learning experience is saved as a draft under the temporary title "Untitled". You can come back and change the choice before you publish.
Resource
The step shows "Set up your resource", where you build the structure.
Progression type
First choose a Progression type:
- Linear means learners complete modules in a set sequence.
- Flexible means learners can complete modules in any order.
Modules
Below that, one module called "Module 1" is created for you. For each module you can:
- rename it
- mark it Required or Optional
- add a resource from your library by typing in Add or search for a resource
- add content by choosing Upload from device, Add weblink or Add text content
- add a placeholder by choosing Add a placeholder
- ask learners to upload proof of their work by choosing Add evidence upload
- collapse it, or remove it
- drag it into a different position, once you have more than one
A module left without a name blocks Continue.
New modules start as Required. A learner does not have to finish a module marked Optional to complete the learning experience. A learning experience must keep at least one Required module. If you set the last Required module to Optional, you see "A learning experience must keep at least one required module." and the module goes back to Required.
A placeholder names a slot that you fill later.
Add evidence upload is under Request evidence, which shows only when evidence steps are turned on for your organisation. Contact support to have evidence steps turned on.
When you remove a module that holds anything other than placeholders, a message titled "Remove this module?" asks you to confirm. A module that is empty or holds only placeholders is removed straight away.
Select Add module to add the next one. Changes to your modules and what is in them are saved as you make them. Your choice of Progression type is saved when you select Continue.
Continue becomes available once every module has a name and holds at least one item, including placeholders.
Evidence upload
If you choose Add evidence upload, a window titled "Evidence upload" opens:
- Fill in Instructions for learners and Guidance for managers, each up to 255 characters of plain text.
- Select Done.
Both texts are required. The learner's manager approves the evidence in the Requests tab of Team Management, where it appears as "Evidence sign-off". The step then appears in the module as "Evidence upload", with Edit instructions to change the texts. It counts as an item in its module.
In the same window you can attach one PDF as a template document. Under Template document (optional), select Browse files or drop the file on the area. The step row then shows "Template: <file name>".
Select Replace file to swap the PDF, or Remove to detach it. If the file is not a PDF, you see "The template must be a PDF."
Select Continue to go to the Details step. The Details, Cover, Settings and Preview and publish steps are shared by both paths. They are described in Finish and publish a learning experience.
Troubleshooting
If New learning experience cannot be selected, you do not have the permission that allows you to create learning experiences. Hover over the button and you see "You do not have permission to perform this action".
