What is a category?
Categories are the highest-level grouping of content — think of them as the chapters in the book that is your course. When learners complete the introduction, they're taken to a category selection screen where they choose which category to explore first.
A category can contain topics, activities, and slides (see The structure of courses).
Creating a category
- Click + Add Page and select Category.
- Add your title.
- Click Add Page.
⚠ Do not name a category "category" — this prevents you from creating additional categories.
Adding content to a category
When you create a category, add its course material in the text box provided. This is the information shown to the learner at the start of the category (typically the actual policy text or learning objective).
Alternate course materials
To show different material to different users:
- Click Add Alternate Course Materials at the bottom of the page.
- Add your alternate intro and body text.
- Open the Page Settings tab and scroll to the new section: Show To Select Users.
- Enable to reveal dropdowns that set a condition — for example, show this category only to learners in a certain role or region.
(See Branching content for more on conditional visibility.)
Theming your category
Open the Page Settings tab to add imagery:
- Category Image — appears on the category selection screen.
- Category Background — overrides the course background throughout that category.
Configuring the category selection screen
To control how the category selection screen appears to learners:
- Click Configuration in the editor toolbar.
- Choose Category Selection (under Learner Experience).
- Toggle the category-select screen on or off, choose a layout (e.g. Tiles or List), and set the header text.
