How do I find the navigation settings?
Course → Configuration → LEARNER EXPERIENCE → Activities
The settings here apply to every activity in the course. Settings for one individual activity live on that activity's own Page Settings tab — see Activity Types & Configuration.
Three switches that change how activities work
- New Card Flip Activity
- New Hotspot Activity
- Lock Answer Order
Use New Card Flip Activity ·& Use New Hotspot Activity
Each of these opts your course into a newer implementation of something it already has. Card Flip and Hotspots both exist in the old and the new UI, and these switches decide which one your learners get.

For the New Hotspot Use the New Activity Feedback & Banner to change the hotspot instructions and the test on the hotspot button.

Lock Answer Order
Stops answer options being shuffled, so every learner sees them in the order you wrote them.
Shuffling is usually preferable in an assessment—it makes answers harder to share. Lock the order when the options are inherently sequenced, such as steps in a process or a scale from least to most.
Labels and instructions
These set the wording learners see across every activity:
- Activity Instructions — the standing instruction shown with an activity
- Attempts Remaining — how remaining attempts are described
- Correct Message and Incorrect Message — the standard feedback wording
- Slider Instructions, Hotspots Instructions, Hotspots Button — wording specific to those activity types
Keep them short. They appear on every activity of that type, so a sentence that reads well once can become tiring by the tenth.
The activity select screen
If Enable Activity Selection is on, learners choose which activity to attempt rather than being taken through in order. You can then set:
- Subtitle — the text under the heading
- Show Attempts — whether remaining attempts are visible on the selection screen
- Show Difficulty — whether each activity's difficulty is visible
- Advanced Activity Labels — custom wording for the activity states
Showing difficulty helps learners choose sensibly. It also tells them which activities are worth more, which may or may not be what you want.
Activity feedback screens
Two screens a learner sees after an activity: Passed and Failed.
EG Passed
| In editing mode | What the Users will See |
Each has a customisable Icon, Title, Subtitle, and Image.
These are the most visible moments in an assessment and the easiest to leave on defaults. The failed screen is worth particular care—it is read by someone who has just got something wrong, and the wording should tell them what happens next rather than simply that they failed.
Preview both before publishing. You will not see them by passing the course.
