When delivering compliance training or critical instructions, you may want to ensure that learners engage with your video and audio content in full. With the ability to Lock Media Completion, you can prevent learners from fast-forwarding or skipping ahead through uploaded media while still allowing them to rewind and review sections they have already played.
Overview
Locking media completion disables forward seeking on the media player's progress bar and prevents keyboard shortcuts from skipping ahead. Once enabled, learners must play through the entire duration of the clip before the element is marked as complete.
Key capabilities:
- Restricted fast-forwarding: Learners cannot scrub ahead or jump past unplayed portions of the media.
- Flexible review: Learners can freely rewind at any time to re-listen or re-watch, and can scrub forward back to the furthest point reached.
- Full completion tracking: The media element only registers as completed when 100% of the duration has played.
- Flexible scope: Apply locking project-wide or configure it per individual audio/video component.
How to Configure Media Locking
You can apply locking globally across your entire project or on specific individual media elements.
Method 1: Enable for an Individual Media Element
To enforce full playback on a specific video or audio file:
- In Author view, open the page containing your media.
- Click on the Video or Audio component to open its settings panel.
- Locate the Enforce Completion section.
- Toggle on On/Off/Use Project Default.
- Save your changes.
Method 2: Enable Course-Wide (Global Setting)
If your entire course consists of mandatory compliance video or audio:
- Open your project in the authoring tool.
- Navigate to Project Settings > Questions & Completion.
- Under the media playback settings, enable Require learners to watch or listen in full.
- Save your changes. All eligible uploaded video and audio elements will now enforce locked playback by default.
Best Practices & Tips
- Pair with page gating: Combine locked media with page locking in your page settings to prevent learners from proceeding to the next page until the video or audio finishes.
- Inform your learners: Add introductory text or an instruction banner (e.g., "Please listen to the entire audio clip before continuing") so learners understand why forward scrub controls are restricted.
- Keep media concise: Because learners cannot skip ahead, chunk lengthy presentations into shorter, focused segments (3–5 minutes) to maintain engagement.
